Context
Over the course of my final year of university, I tasked myself with developing a project that allowed me to explore my Filipino heritage and cultural identity in some way. From the beginning stages of my research to the final design output, central to this project was the question:
As a child of Filipino immigrants, how has Filipino food served as a means for expressing and preserving cultural identity within my own family in the face of the social and cultural pressures of acculturation?
The Project
Sweet and Sour — A narrative book exploring my parents' immigration journey, their efforts to build and adapt to a life in Canada, our family's food traditions, favourite recipes passed down through generations, and the role of food in navigating my identity as a Filipino Canadian. The name is a reference to a key flavour pairing in Filipino cuisine and to the good and bad of my family's life in Canada.
